# Arrested Development Quotes API

> A free, read-only REST API serving quotes from the television series *Arrested
> Development*. No API key, no sign-up, no account. Three endpoints, all GET,
> all returning JSON.

over this file for anything beyond a quick orientation.

## The data

Every response wraps exactly one quote in a `data` object:

- `id` — identifier for the quote, such as `quote-288`.
- `quote` — the line. Quotes that are exchanges keep their speaker prefixes in
  the text.
- `speakers` — everyone who speaks, comma separated with no space, in the order
  they speak. An empty string means nobody has identified the speaker yet, which
  is true of a small number of quotes.
- `context` — episode or situation, usually `null`.
- `imageUrl` — full URL of an attached image, or `null`.

Speaker names come from a fixed list of 46 characters and are matched
case-insensitively. There is one canonical spelling per character: `GOB`, never
`Gob` or `G.O.B.`. `Lucille` means Lucille Bluth; Lucille Austero is written out
in full.

600 quotes are on file.

## Endpoints

- [GET /api/quotes/random](https://api.lucille2.com/api/quotes/random): One
  quote from anyone in the show, chosen at random.
- [GET /api/quotes/{character}](https://api.lucille2.com/api/quotes/michael):
  One random quote naming that character. Matches if the requested name is any
  of a quote's speakers, so `michael` can return a quote whose speakers are
  `"Lucille,Michael"`. Returns 404 when the character has no quotes on file.
- [GET /api/quotes/meme](https://api.lucille2.com/api/quotes/meme): One random
  quote that has `imageUrl` set.

Errors return a single `error` field describing what happened, for example
`{"error": "No quotes found for character: Hermano"}`.

## Notes for automated clients

Responses carry `Cache-Control: public, max-age=3600`. CORS is open for GET.

There is no pagination and no endpoint that returns the full collection; each
call returns one quote. Repeatedly polling the random endpoint is not a way to
enumerate the data. If you want the whole set, take
[quotes.json](https://github.com/bbhart/bluthsapi/blob/main/app/data/quotes.json)
from the repository instead — it is the same file the API serves from, and
fetching it once is cheaper for everyone.

`robots.txt` disallows crawling `/api/`. That is aimed at bulk spidering, not at
an agent fetching a quote because someone asked for one.
